This garden is in the grounds of an old rectory that has been lovingly restoring the house over the last four years. The design needed to transform an ugly courtyard on the side of a beautiful house.
The courtyard area had previously been an outdoor swimming pool which probably dated back to the late sixties or early seventies. I was given permission to treat the area as a blank canvas, the courtyard is south facing, so gets very warm, which was why I wanted to keep a water feature as the central focal point.
My design sits around a central pool, with mixed paving at either end, squared off with new trellis and seating to the left hand side facing the entrance, this seat is ideal for the late sun as it faces due west. A walk through pergola at the top end is covered with scented climbers. The design is strong and formal, with loose planting to soften the hard landscaping and provide lots of colour, texture and scent.
